And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!” Revelation 5:13
The Bible uses many different metaphors for life, including fighting and running a race. No one who has lived long in this world would deny that there are challenges that come along to hinder you in “fighting the good fight of faith” and “running in such a way that you may obtain the prize”. Trouble seems to have a way of finding you even if you do not go out looking for it!
If you could step back and see the entire battlefield or race track, you could have a better picture of how things are going but, alas, when you are in the middle of it all, it’s hard to see anything other than what is happening right around you right now. The result is that sometimes you may feel as if you are losing the war or the race, as it were. In other words, it seems like the enemy may be winning; but that’s not the real score.
Often, we see examples in the Word of God that would seem to show the children of God losing and the enemy winning. That would have been the assessment of anyone arriving on the scene when Goliath was taunting God’s people and getting away with it. The score would seem to be Goliath ten, God’s people zero. But that wasn’t the real score, only the way things seemed to the natural senses. Everything you would have seen and heard would have told you that was the case, but there are always things at work that cannot be seen or heard or perceived by the natural man. Goliath made that fatal mistake and it cost him his head! All of the odds were against David in that battle, but that’s without the God factor.
The Apostle Paul had some wonderful experiences with the Lord that he was not allowed to recount; being caught up into the heavenly realm. John, however, was not only allowed but commissioned by God to write down his experiences and what he saw. Thus, we have the book of Revelation and our verse for today. The fourth chapter of the Revelation begins with a door open into heaven where John (and the rest of us) get to see the Throne of God and the Living Creatures around the throne and the awesomeness of it all. Through this peek into the heavenly realm, we are reassured of the real score in all of the battles and races of life that come our way — the Lord is above all and has all power and His people always come out the winner.
When you find yourself in the fight of your life or running a race that seems to be getting the best of you, remember that you have been made a king and priest and you are more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ. The One who sits on the throne and the Lamb of God have all power. Everything is under the feet of Jesus. His name is above all names!
The score that is kept in this world is not the way things are, just the way things appear. Goliath looks like the clear winner until you factor in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Then, the shepherd boy with his sling and stone becomes a giant slayer. When the battle’s over and the race has ended you, as God’s child, win. That’s the real score!
