He Alone is Your Rock

Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved. Psalms 62:1-2

One of the most difficult things to do in life is to wait. But there is waiting and then there is silently waiting. Sometimes you have to wait because you just have to wait; there is nothing you can do to speed up the process of whatever it is you are waiting for. If you are waiting for water to boil, nothing you say or think or feel is going to cause it to boil any faster — it will boil when it reaches its boiling point. Period.

The hands of the clock are not going to move any faster toward an anticipated time by you watching the clock or counting down the seconds and minutes. You can try to coax things along with your words of encouragement but alas, time is not in your hands. If you are waiting for a certain time or date to arrive, all you can do is wait. Boiling water and the passing of time are known entities. You still have to wait for them but you at least know where things stand.

There are plenty of other things that require waiting but do not have the consistency of boiling water or the passing of time. There is no way to know how long you will have to wait until you have what you are waiting for. These are the things that provide a good testing of your faith. It is not a matter of waiting, for there is no way around the waiting. The key, which David is highlighting in our verses today, is to get to the place of faith and trust in God to be able to silently wait for the Lord to come through.

As you wait for an answer to prayer or for a promise to be fulfilled, the real battle is inside — in your soul. You can only rest quietly in faith when your thoughts and emotions have been placed in God’s hands, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. When you find your words not aligning with what you know about God and His plan for your life then the area that needs adjusting is in your soul. Once your thoughts are in line with God’s thoughts toward you, then your emotions will follow and then your words (or, perhaps lack of words!).

Things in this life are uncertain. Everything will come in its own time as God has appointed it, but that does not make the waiting any easier. Only when you realize and acknowledge that God alone is your Rock. Things can change like the weather and be as unstable as the shifting sand under your feet, but when your life is in the Lord’s hands, you are on a solid, unmoving foundation.

The Lord is your salvation and your defense; you have nothing to fear. There will be times when it seems like that water will never boil and the hands of the clock are having to pass through molasses to get to where they are going. There will be plenty of things that keep you waiting longer than you ever imagined. What a joy and what a victory when you realize that you are suddenly hearing the sound of silence in your waiting. That you have taken all of those as yet unanswered prayers and still to be fulfilled promises and placed them at the feet of Jesus. You are silently waiting for God, for He alone is your Rock!
