Therefore, it is also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.” Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,” 1 Peter 2:6-7
Peter is referring to prophesy contained not only in the Psalms but also in Isaiah. He also quoted it in the fourth chapter of Acts when preaching after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In three of the Gospels, we see Jesus quoting the prophesy as well. In other words, this is very significant; one of those truths that can literally be life changing.
Three things in particular to note in this prophesy are, number one, it is the Lord God himself who lays this cornerstone. This is a Cornerstone that is laid in the spiritual realm that will affect all of life in the natural world. Secondly, an absolute promise from God — if you build your life on this foundation you will absolutely not be disappointed with the outcome. And finally, anyone who builds their house without this cornerstone will one day realize that their house cannot stand without it!
There are plenty of references to stones and foundations and building throughout the Word of God. Of course, all of those references, like all Scripture, is important and declares to us truth from God. The word picture we have here is of builders selecting a stone to be the cornerstone of a building, perhaps a house. The cornerstone is the most important piece of building material in the entire project. It is the first part of the foundation that is set and every other stone in the foundation will be set in reference to it. Then, the remainder of the building will depend on the foundation being true and solid for it to stand.
Needless to say, if you don’t get the cornerstone right, no other part of the construction is going to work out. All of the labor will be in vain! On the other hand, if you get the cornerstone right, you have what you need to build on and when everything is put in its place, you have a solid structure. Now that we see the natural reference, it is time to apply it to the spiritual and unfold the eternal truth contained in our verses for today.
Your life is like a building. As with all buildings, it begins with the foundation. If you choose to make Jesus the chief cornerstone of your life, then that is the starting point for everything else you do to build on it. That means, whenever you are ready to add another piece to your life, no matter what that may be, it needs to built on that cornerstone.
There may be the tendency to try and build parts of your life on a different foundation for one reason or another. Perhaps it is trying to fit in with the world, or maybe you feel you know better than the Lord what would be best for you in a particular area of your life. For whatever reason, you start to build and, before you know it, everything seems to come tumbling down around you.
God is merciful and patient. Clear out that rubble and rebuild, but this time, be sure your foundation is right. Build every part of your life on Jesus — The Cornerstone!
