Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever and ever. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable. Psalms 145:2-3
There are many reasons in life that people celebrate. Jesus performed His first public miracle at a wedding celebration. To mark an accomplishment or to commemorate the reaching of a goal, one may very well include a celebration. These could be seen as highlights in life; times to be remembered.
God is merciful to allow you to look back over your life and, as if you were turning the pages of a photo album, turn your mind and your heart back to those highlights, those times in your life that are so full of joy and celebration. There are, of course, other days; other times. Events that brought with them sorrow or pain or loss. There doesn’t seem to be anything good to remember from those pages in the history book of your life.
Besides the ups and downs, there are the other days — the ordinary days (whatever ordinary is) that don’t really register on life’s chart as being particularly life-changing one way or the other. Most days would fit in that category; just another day. Days like that can turn into weeks and months and sometimes even years. Before you realize it, all of that time has gotten away from you without even a page for life’s photo album!
Every day is a gift from God — every moment. Even those days that seem so ordinary are, in fact, extraordinary in so many ways. There are a couple of things in particular that you can do to keep your perspective and not let the extraordinary get overshadowed by the routine of your daily life.
In determining the highs and lows of life, the attention is turned inward; it’s like seeing life in “selfie” mode. To put it another way, how does the day look from where you are standing? Everything changes when you look at today (and every day) with the Lord at the center of it all. Just think what a difference it would make to choose every day to bless the Lord. To bless the Lord is to kneel before Him; essentially, to exalt Him as God and humble yourself before Him as His creation, acknowledging you are on this earth to do His will.
When you take that approach to today, it’s going to be a good day. The Lord is going to lift you up and, as you bless Him you will find your life blessed beyond what you could even think or ask of Him. That does not mean there will never be challenging times, but things look a lot differently when the lens of life is pointing toward the Lord and not at yourself. With the focus on the Lord, life takes on a constancy of joy, peace and hope that cannot be found otherwise. This leads to the second thing — praise.
When you set your attention and your affections on the Lord, blessing Him and putting your life in His hands, it will invariably lead to praise. You will find yourself praising God for who He is rather than basing your feelings and your words on the particulars of today. This day will come and go, whatever it holds, but the Lord always remains faithful and constant. Don’t miss this extraordinary day. Today is the day to bless the Lord!
