“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
There is no end to what you could learn by spending time with Jesus. He has all knowledge and wisdom and understanding. He was with the Father at the creation of the world and everything in it. It was all made through Him. Even now, He upholds all things by the word of His power. Jesus was there before the foundations of the world were laid. He knows all of your days and even all of your thoughts!
If you lack wisdom, you have only to ask of the Lord in faith, without doubting, and God will grant your request. Throughout Jesus’ time on the earth as both the Son of God and the Son of Man, He did much teaching. Many times, He was teaching before large crowds of people and other times it was just a select few. There are also plenty of examples of Jesus taking time to teach individuals, using situations at hand or illustrations from the natural world around Him to teach spiritual truths.
Once, for instance, He taught a man about loving God and being truly thankful for forgiveness by pointing out an event that had just taken place in the man’s own house — a woman who was a sinner had washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. It might not seem like such a big deal looking back on it, but if you had been there and heard Jesus sharing those words, it would have been life changing!
But Jesus not only taught with His words, He also taught with His life. Thus, you can learn a lot of lessons from how Jesus lived as well as from the words He spoke. Who could have forgotten the lesson of the basin and towel when Jesus washed His disciples’ feet? It is even more significant when you remember that Jesus already knew that they would soon all forsake Him in his greatest hour of need!
Even though there are a couple of examples when Jesus exhorts us to learn a lesson from one of His parables, there is only one instance when He tells us to learn from Him and it is in our verses for today. It might seem like a simple thing, but it is actually a challenge to truly rest in the Lord. To do that, you have to be willing to let go and let God be God. Sure, you want to; who wouldn’t? But it is much easier said than done.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could lay down the heavy burden you are carrying around everywhere you go? It could be a load from the past that you have never truly forgiven yourself for or perhaps never forgiven someone else. It could be a load from the present with all you have to do and to deal with on a daily basis. It could be a load from the future that does not even exist, yet by worrying about tomorrow you take that burden upon yourself as though it is something you have to bear today.
Whether it is a load from yesterday, today or tomorrow or maybe all three, there is a lesson here for you from the Master. Lay down that heavy load and rest in Him. Learn from Jesus!
