Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah Psalms 62:8
To trust in the Lord, as we are exhorted to do in this Psalm, is more than just words; it goes much deeper than that. It is being confident, even sure that God is who He says He is and can and will do what He says He will do. Trust comes from deep within your being and brings as its companion a holy boldness. It may even at times seem to be careless to the onlooker who does not share your faith and trust in God when in reality it is not a matter of being careless but rather casting your cares upon the Lord!
When King David received this song from the Lord, it is obvious that God was not trying to give a false impression of life in this world — even for a man after God’s own heart. As long as you dwell on this earth, there will be challenges and storms. You can certainly find plenty of evidence of that truth by looking at David’s life. At first glance you might think that David had it made; after all, he was king!
When you think of the battles David faced in his life, the one that includes Goliath is probably at or near the top of the list. There is no question it was one of the most epic battles of all time. At the same time, there are some points that need to be observed. First, the battle-line was clearly drawn. There was no doubt that Goliath was the enemy of God, God’s people and everything that was good. Secondly, the battle parameters were very clear; this would be a fight to the death. The battle would be over when that blasphemous giant was dead. One giant, one battle, one day and it’s done.
But David would go on to fight many other battles that were not so clear-cut or so quickly won. Upon closer examination, you find David’s life filled with unimaginable pain and betrayal, not to mention his own shortcomings and the problems that resulted from those poor choices. Indeed, David faced many battles throughout his life besides the ones on the battlefields with slings and swords and spears.
You may never face a giant in battle with just a sling and a stone, but you have your giants just the same — and those battles are not always settled with just one round! The battle-lines are not always so easy to see and the enemy is not such that you can vanquish him with just a single blow. Even though you seek to follow the Lord and walk in all of His ways, still you find yourself facing those giants!
The good news is that you are never alone in the fight; the Lord is always with you and He has even gone before you. Not only is He there when you get there but He has a place prepared for you — a place of refuge, a place where you can rest and be refreshed, a place where you can pour out your heart before Him.
When David faced Goliath with such boldness and declared how that battle would end, it seemed like he was being careless. How could he (or you) defeat such a giant? He couldn’t. Neither can you, but God can and will. That giant will fall. Trust in the Lord at all times!
