Get Your Mind in Line

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2

It is amazing to observe how flexible babies and small children are. As they grow older, they will become less flexible and have to work at maintaining at least a portion of that which once was naturally a part of who they were. Indeed, as time goes by the body tends to settle into a particular state of flexibility (or lack thereof).

It is not just the body that starts out flexible and pliable only to end up set, to a certain degree, in its ways. It is just as true of the mind which is a part of the soul. A little one’s mind is like a sponge, ready and able to soak up anything and everything that it comes in contact with. Over time, the mind will be shaped and molded, if you will, to conform to that which helped form it. Then, before you realize it, the mind, like the body is set in its ways and not so flexible as it once was.

More than likely, when you became a Christian your mind was already conformed to the world in which you grew up and in which you live. The way you think and the things you say, even the way you feel about things are the result of how your mind has been formed. Without even trying, you can be influenced by the world and the people around you. If you let them, people will try to coerce you and shame you into thinking like they think, and like they think you should think. The end result is that most people are conformed in their thinking to this world.

You can get your mind in line with God’s will. You do not have to be, nor should you be conformed to the world’s ways for, as a child of God, you are not of this world. It does not matter how you were raised or how your mind was shaped and molded growing up, you can become the person God created you to be. You can be transformed by renewing your mind, re-molding it, as it were. It might seem like a challenge after it has been set in its ways for so long, but with God’s power at work on you and in you, through His Word and by His Spirit, your mind can be brought into alignment with His will.

Put your life, and your way of thinking, into God’s hands. He, as the Potter, can take the lump of clay which is your life and shape it into something totally different than it has always been. You are only limited by your past way of thinking if you do not allow the Lord to do some sculpting with His divine hands!

As you spend time in His presence and truly humble yourself before Him, you will begin to see things differently, to re-prioritize things in your life, to believe that things can be different, can be better. Choose not to remain in that old state of conformity to the world. Choose the transforming power of God which will give you a new mind, a renewed mind. The world will still be as it is and others will be as they will be, but you can choose to live the life God created you to live, once you get your mind in line with His will!
