This Very Thing

Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; Philippians 1:6

There are plenty of examples throughout the world of things that were started and never finished. More than likely, you even have some examples of your own you could point to. Perhaps some projects around the house that got off to a good start but are still waiting for completion. Whatever the case may be, it is quite common to have more beginnings than endings when it comes to things!

As a child of God, you have the advantage of knowing the future. Oh, not every detail of every moment of every day, but you know how your story ends, or rather how it never ends! Heaven and earth will pass away, but God’s Word and His promises to you will never come to an end. That gives you the big picture and the assurance of the blessed hope you have of a home in heaven. That is for then, but what about now?

It is a blessing to have promises like our verse for today to keep your confidence level up during those challenging times in life when you can’t see how it could possibly all work out. You know the Lord has begun a good work in your life and it is a work in progress but sometimes it seems more like one step forward and two back rather than pressing on toward the mark!

God gives you times and seasons and evenings and mornings so that you can get a fresh start when needed. Whether it is a season you are going through or just a hard day that never seems to end, the spring time will always come in its time no matter how long and how severe the winter, and the sun will come up in the morning no matter how long or how dark the night. The Lord will never leave you nor forsake you and you can be sure He is with you in that season and through that night.

Do not try to determine the outcome of your journey based on your past or current travels. There is only one thing that will give you confidence in this life that will outlast the winter and carry you through the night — the promises of God’s Word. You know God has touched your life and turned your life around. You can look back and see clearly the difference between where you were before you put your life into His hands and after. In other words, there is no doubt that God has a plan for your life in this life. He begun that good work in you for a purpose; His purpose.

As you observe God’s creation, you see things changing all around you. You also see things that change but always come back to where they were, or at least they seem to. The trees will go through their changes every year and end up back where they started. Their leaves changed colors and maybe even fell off during the seasons, but eventually there they are back again. The same, yet different. They made it through another winter. They have grown, maybe not enough even to notice, but they have grown. So do you!

There is only one real thing, this very thing. What God started in you He will finish!
