And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.” John 11:44
Even though we have been made alive, in some ways we still live as if we are dead.
How can you get rid of those graveclothes? For Lazarus, when he came up out of the tomb, he looked more like a mummy than a man, being bound hand and foot as well as having his face wrapped with a cloth. That sounds a lot like the description of a mummy doesn’t it? You can’t very well get on with life when you are bound up with death! With the help of family and friends, he was free in no time But how does that help you get free of your old self; old thoughts and old ways of responding to situations and old ways of living apart from God?
It doesn’t matter how long you have been out of that spiritual grave, it is possible that you could still have some lingering graveclothes — things you have not given over to the Lord. Maybe because you reason it out with thoughts like, “that’s just the way I am” or “that’s the way God made me”, but those graveclothes were not a part of what God had in mind when He made you. The Lord is calling you today to be loosed and set free from the things in your past that would keep you bound up. The truth shall make you free, lay aside the things from your past that have held you back and press on in the Lord. Get rid of the graveclothes!
