So, why would it be just for the Lord to forgive us our sins when we confess them? We should still have to pay since we were found guilty, right? That would be and is correct, except for one thing — Jesus paid the price of redemption so that we could be released from our debt of sin; when we confess our sins through faith in Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven. Jesus laid down His life so that we could have eternal life; He died so that we might live. That is the wonder of forgiveness, the wonder of God’s justice.
Jesus taught us that we are to live by God’s justice, more to the point, if we have something against someone and they ask forgiveness, it is the right thing for us to forgive them. What makes it right if they are guilty? In the same way we have been forgiven we are to forgive others. They will still have to settle things with the Lord, but it releases you from being in bondage to that sin. When you withhold forgiveness from someone, you are allowing their sin to keep you bound up with thoughts and feelings that are in no way beneficial to you.
There may be situations where someone has not sought forgiveness and is continuing to sow destructive seeds not only in their own life but in every life with which they have contact. It would be easy to want justice in those circumstances. After all, the guilty party is not seeking forgiveness or reconciliation; they may even be flaunting their sin. How can we apply God’s justice in a situation like that?
There is nothing to do but let God be God and you be His sheep; the recipient of His forgiveness. “Vengeance is mine” says the Lord, “I will repay”. Even though it might seem like sinners get away with sinning, the Word of God is very clear as to what comes next when we leave this world — judgment. If a person rejects God’s provision of redemption in this life then he will have to pay the price for his sin in the end. But, leave that in the Lord’s hands. What are you to do? Demonstrate God’s forgiveness, offer them God’s justice!
