It is one thing to believe that God is able to help you; that He has the power and authority and whatever else is needed in any given situation. As you read through the Word of God, His abilities are on display from the very beginning of time all of the way into eternity! But, beyond just reading about it, you can look around and know that our God is an awesome God because of His creation. Day and night the heavens declare His glory and all around you the wonders of His creation are bringing Him glory.
It is another thing altogether though, to believe that God will help you, even if you have faith that He can help you. Just knowing that He is able is not the same as being confident that He is willing!
But, if God is able to help, why would He not be willing? Let’s consider the leper who asked Jesus for help. It is hard to even imagine the life that this man lived; shunned not only from friends but even his family. Lepers were isolated from the rest of the population and could never live a normal life. Maybe if you had a very mild, limited case of the disease you could hide it to some degree and get by with doing some things that healthy people did in their everyday lives, but not this man. The Bible says specifically that he was “full of leprosy”, basically covered from head to toe. No one would have ever gotten close to him.
Given the way he had been treated, it’s no wonder that, even though he believed Jesus could help him, still he had questions about whether or not He would. However, Jesus said, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Jesus was willing to touch the untouchable, to love the unlovable.
Maybe sometimes you feel sort of like that leper, you don’t feel you deserve any help from the Lord. You might have even been told by others how unworthy you are to have anything good happen in your life. Perhaps you have been shunned by others who really should be showing you love. Whatever the case may be, you could be in your own leper colony, so to speak, with no real hope or expectation that Jesus is going to pass by your way any time soon. After all, why would He; no one visits the lepers and if they do stop by, they sure don’t hang around long enough to help.
The good news for you today is that Jesus is not like anyone else. You may feel as unclean and unworthy as a leper and have been hurt and mistreated by everyone around you, isolated and all alone in the world. Then, Jesus comes along and He does not hesitate to come near you, He is not put off by your need for cleansing and restoration. In fact, it seems as if He is especially drawn to you, because He is. That is the very reason Jesus came to the earth, to heal and bind up our wounds, to make whole again that which is torn asunder, to cleanse that which is unclean. Can God do all of those things? That and much more, and He is not just able to do it, He is willing!
