It seems like some things never change, even back in Solomon’s day there was the tendency to look back at days gone by and think that they were better than these days. There are a couple of reasons why we tend to think along those lines. First let’s consider the children of Israel when they had been delivered from Egypt and brought out by the Lord to receive the promise of the inheritance God had for them. Sadly, it wasn’t long before they were longing for the days in Egypt, remembering how wonderful it was back then. Wait, that doesn’t make any sense, seeing how they were slaves barely surviving and sorely mistreated. How could they possibly even for one tiny second think of those days longingly? That is an example (and we still have the same situation today) of the enemy deceiving us into missing what never was as though it was! They never had a great life as slaves in Egypt and yet the devil will do his best to convince you that your life of sin was somehow something to be missed.
Another reason we may miss what was, is because we have some genuinely great things in our past, perhaps a simpler time in your life or a time when you were younger or maybe in better health. Maybe you have grown children or relatives and you think back to when they were little and you have wonderful memories of those times. It could be a time in your life when things were better for you physically or spiritually, or both! Possibly you have lost someone you love and have great memories from when they were still with you. Whatever the particulars in your life, these are a few examples of good things that should be remembered and praise God for our memory (and for the ability to take a seemingly limitless number of pictures!). Memories of good things and great times are indeed a blessing from God and they are what we can carry forward with us from those days. Everything in life is moving forward and we must press on as well. Children grow up, they do not remain as babies; even though that is a special time, it would not be natural or healthy to stay a baby their entire life! Things change and there is no way to stop the changes that are according to God’s order of things in this life.
What can be done then, about missing what was? In truth, every day has the potential to be great because it is a day that the Lord has made and He is great so it follows that today can and should be a great day. So, with God’s help, we leave behind everything that really wasn’t good even if the enemy tries to deceive us into thinking it was. And we carry with us, through our God given memories, all that was good from that which was.
