Your Father Knows What You Need

Your heavenly Father loves you so much and He wants to give good gifts to you and indeed has filled your life with good things. (Perhaps you could take just a moment and think of five good things in your life right now and write them down, giving thanks to God for them.) But Moses warned the people of something that we experience even in our day; it is easy to forget the Lord after you have everything you will ever need. When a generation grows up with everything already provided for them, they never learn to ask for anything, they just take it for granted.

It can be the same way in our spiritual life; we can easily take for granted the good things God has done for us, even coming to expect good things from Him, though we do not deserve them! As you continue on a bit further in that sixth chapter of Matthew, you come to what is known as the Lord’s Prayer. Included is a line that sounds a lot like the days of Israel in the wilderness being fed by the Lord on a daily basis, “give us our bread day by day”.

Yes, your Father knows what you need before you even ask Him. Remember, He knows everything and He can do anything! But, He also knows that if He gave you everything you would ever need, you would have a tendency to forget where that provision came from and begin to expect it to be there, even imagining that your own cleverness or ability brought you to that place of provision. So, He says to ask and you will receive. By asking the Lord for His help you are acknowledging your need for Him and you are humbling yourself before the Lord. God gives grace to the humble but He resists the proud. As long as you stay dependent upon the Lord, He will provide. After all, your Father knows what you need!
