There are plenty of examples that illustrate how easy and natural it is to rejoice in the Lord when you see His hand at work in a mighty, even miraculous way. That’s great for those mountaintop times; when everything is going just the way you wanted it to and the Lord is obviously answering your every prayer. You almost can’t help but to praise the Lord during those times. It is easy to express your reason for rejoicing.
But, as you may have already noticed, life is not always that clear cut and straightforward, even for a child of God. You may be trusting God to answer a prayer and it seems as if nothing is happening. Or, it could be even more challenging — maybe you have been praying and it just seems the situation is getting worse instead of better! How can you rejoice during those times? What do you have to rejoice in when things are not as you want them to be?
Your journey with the Lord is a walk of faith. Even though you have not seen Him, you love Him. Then, as you go through life with its ups and downs, you still do not see the Lord, yet, you see His hand at work in your life and circumstances; all around you are the fingerprints of your loving heavenly Father! Sure, along the way, there will be those Red Sea moments when you can see God at work on your behalf. There will be those times when the Lord obviously puts the devil in his place and you will rejoice in the Lord and give Him glory.
And then, there will be the rest of the times; the times when your faith in the goodness and faithfulness of God causes you to rejoice in the Lord even though you do not see anything in the natural that would warrant it. This is not so much rejoicing in what the Lord has done as it is rejoicing in what He is going to do, rejoicing in His promises because you know they are true. You cannot necessarily point to anything tangible and say, “that is why I am rejoicing” because the source of this joy is inexpressible. You believe beyond what you can see. Your faith is built on the sure foundation of God’s Word and your personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. You can’t see Him, yet believing, you rejoice!
