God Will Finish What He Started

Jesus talked about one of the reasons a project remains unfinished; the builder didn’t count the cost before he began to build and so he leaves the project unfinished. It was a great idea and the builder had the best of intentions, but once he got started and realized what it was going to cost to complete the project, it just wasn’t worth it.

Praise God, He doesn’t leave us unfinished just because of the high cost. What if the Lord would have said, “I really would like to redeem mankind, they are after all my special creation, fashioned after my own image, to have fellowship with Me.” But then, once He got started with the plan of salvation, He realized the cost of redemption for mankind would be the sacrificial death of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. What if, after counting the cost, He decided not to finish what He started? But, our God is not like that — He began a good work in you and He will see it to completion!

Another reason we sometimes don’t finish what we started is because we lose interest and get distracted with something else. You can see that tendency in small children as their attention span is very limited and they move from one project to something totally different in a matter of minutes! With adults, it gets better but sometimes not by much. We can lose the zeal for something before it is completed and the end result is an unfinished project.

And, what about the Lord and His project, namely you? What are the chances that He will lose interest in you and move onto something or someone else? Not a chance of that! The Lord has loved you with an everlasting love. Even if you sometimes feel unlovable and wonder why the Lord loved you in the first place, He never has any doubts about you. In fact, Jesus put it for us like this: if a shepherd has a flock of one hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, the shepherd doesn’t forget about that lost sheep, instead, he will leave the ninety-nine and go after that one lost lamb.

Jesus is your Good Shepherd and, as King David puts it, “there is nothing I shall have need of”. The Lord is going to take care of you on the good days as well as those not so good days. He will never stop loving you and caring for you. Even if you lose your way, He is pursuing you with a love that cannot be quenched so that He can anoint you with oil and restore you and bring you back into His care. When the Lord began a good work in you, He knew what He was getting, what it would cost Him, how long it would take to get you where He created you to be; He knows all about you. You can be sure, He will finish what He started in you!
