If you were to hear the Lord talking to David after he slew Goliath and it went something like, “David, I am so proud of you, you are a mighty man of valor!” that would not be surprising. After all, even the people sang their songs about David’s exploits (although they may have exaggerated just a bit!). We don’t hear that conversation, but we do hear the Lord say to the prophet Samuel that David is a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). The only thing is that David is still just a shepherd boy taking care of his father’s sheep. He would go on to be king; and to sin greatly against God. But, even when he was young, God saw something special in David.
There would be times in David’s life when, if you look at some of the choices he made, you may not say the same things the Lord said about David. If you see him as he is at that particular point in time, you could even wonder what the Lord was seeing when He proclaimed David to be a man after His own heart. But, that reminds us of the truth that God sees our heart. And it also reminds us that all of our days are known to Him.
So, what does the Lord see in you? When He looks at you, does He see a mighty man or woman of valor? When He looks at your heart, does He see a heart that is following hard after Him? You might think, knowing yourself as well as you do, that the Lord would never see either of those in you. Just remember, no matter how well you know yourself, God knows you infinitely better, so what He says goes!
The good news is that what God sees in you He says about you in His Word. You do not even have to wonder because He comes right out and tells you. Furthermore, no matter what others might say about you, what matters is what God says about you and sees in you.
