What does God is good really mean? After all, our definition of God being good is probably something like “As long as God does things my way, then God is good!” Many times, we approach the goodness of God the way a child sees a parent being good to them. Quite often, a child will consider themselves mistreated and their parents being mean to them because they cannot have their way. You may even hear a child exclaim, “You’re so mean!” or something along those lines. Even though the parents are looking out for the child and doing what is best, from the child’s perspective, it is exactly the opposite!
Sometimes, like the children of Israel, things can be in such a mess, after a whole generation of people reject the Lord and cast off everything that is of God and according to His Word, that you can lose sight of anything that is praiseworthy; anything to be thankful for. But, just like with God’s people in the wilderness, He remembers His covenant and has mercy on us.
There may be times in your life where things have gone so wrong for so long that you can’t think of one good reason to be thankful. Or, maybe you have been looking at everything that is wrong in life and missing the one thing that is always right! If you focus on the negative, you can always find reasons not to be thankful; but that’s not God’s will for you. You can always find one good reason to be thankful — because God is good!
