Even though Peter was an experienced fisherman, he learned an important lesson while fishing one night: We need Jesus in every area of our lives; even those things that we are confident in. In fact, the more self-confident we become the less dependent we are upon the Lord. It is easy to feel that there are things you just don’t need help with; you can do it on your own. Maybe things you are experienced in and have been successful doing, or maybe things you just never felt should be of concern to the Lord.
Our lesson for today is that Jesus must be a part of every area of our life. There is no doubt that Simon Peter was an excellent, skilled fisherman; that was his trade. He had plenty of experience at fishing commercially and, even up to the moment Jesus called him to be His disciple, that’s what Peter was doing. Yet, as they fished that night, they caught nothing.
If you have things in your life that are not working out and you feel you are getting nowhere, it may be that you have not given that over to the Lord but rather are doing it yourself, depending on your own ability or experience or knowledge. It’s time to give it all to Jesus. Get Jesus in the boat with you and, even if you have fished all night and caught nothing, at His word, cast the net on the right side and you will find some.
