Trusting things to work is relatively easy since their functionality is based on physical or electronic properties that are consistent, measurable and predictable. Given the same set of circumstances, things will generally work the same day in and day out. Therefore, your trust is based on what you know to be true about whatever thing it is; you have a foundation on which to build your trust.
Putting trust in people, however, is a totally different matter indeed. Where things are usually predictable, people are anything but. You may have even put your trust in someone in the past only to have that trust broken in some way. A person whom you thought would always be the way you expected turned out not to be so predictable after all. Maybe you had your trust in that person broken and then restored or it may be broken still. It could also be that, because of broken trust in the past, you have closed off your heart to trusting others, especially anyone who has anything in common with the one who let you down.
Finally, in our verse today, we look at taking trust to the highest level — putting your trust in the Lord. But, if you cannot even see the Lord (which you can’t) how is it that you can trust Him? What is the foundation on which this trust is to be built? As with all trust, you need some reason to put yourself out there.
We have the answer in the first part of the verse; “Those who know Your name.” When you know the Lord and you know the names by which He is called, you immediately have a foundation on which to build your trust in Him. Whatever God says about himself, you can count on. Whatever God has said to you or about you in His Word, you can count on. The miracles and great wonders He has done before on behalf of others; you can count on those too. The Word of God and your history with the Lord are your foundation for trusting Him.
The Lord God Almighty is forever the same and He has promised He would never leave you or forsake you. As long as you are seeking the Lord, He will be found by you. You know you can trust the Lord because you have His Word on it. You do not have to see to believe, for you walk by faith not by sight. You know His name, that’s why you put your trust in Him!
