God’s mercies are new every morning and He desires that you start each day fresh, free from the burdens of the past. Today has enough of its own challenges without carrying over some from yesterday and the day before and the month before and the year before and the decade before and, well, you see the point. The Lord only intends for you to carry the load for this day and His grace is always sufficient.
There are plenty of things you could still be carrying around with you that amount to excess baggage, but let’s look at a couple of them in particular. One that can be especially burdensome is past mistakes — things you have confessed to the Lord and He has forgiven you and moved on; when the Lord forgives He forgets. The only problem is, you are holding on to those things and carrying them around as though they are still your burden to bear. You can never do enough good to pay for past sins, you can only wear yourself out trying. Jesus paid the ultimate price to take that burden from you, so let Him be your Savior and let go of your sins and regrets of the past.
Not only can you be burdened down with wrongs you have done, you can go through life carrying a huge bundle of the wrongs done to you. To hold on to unforgiveness or bitterness toward someone, even if you have been truly mistreated by another, does neither of you any good. It does not help the one who wronged you do better and it is certainly not good for you to carry around that extra weight, and it is just that — a burden that will eventually become a crushing weight, keeping you from pressing on as you should.
So, what can be done with these burdens? The guilt of your past trying to weigh you down and follow you around all day every day. Or maybe it’s the constant reminder of what others have done to you; how you have been wronged. In both cases, it would seem that the only thing that could relieve that burden and take that load off of your shoulders is justice. You have to somehow pay for your sins and others have to pay for their sins toward you.
The good news is, there is One Who has paid the price — Jesus. Cast your burdens upon the Lord and He will sustain you. Leave all of those things with the Lord and let Him sort it out. “But, what about this or what about that?” Forget about it!
