The Calling

So, what is the “calling” with which you were called? To get a better understanding of the calling, let’s go back to Jesus’ earthly ministry. One day, He is walking beside the Sea of Galilee when He sees two brothers; Simon (to whom Jesus gives the name Peter) and his brother, Andrew. And what is the calling with which they were called? Jesus said, “Come, follow Me.” Which they did. Then, Jesus went on a little further and saw two other brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. And you can guess (or else you already know) what their calling was — come, follow Jesus.

There may be any number of things you are called to do or to be in God’s Kingdom, but there is a calling with which each of us has been called who are called by the name of Christ: we are called to follow Jesus, to walk in His steps. It is possible to get ahead of the Lord and start pursuing other “callings” while ignoring the calling and thus, find that we are out on our own. You could be doing your thing for God rather than doing God’s thing.

After all, the calling is not about doing great things as man measures greatness, it is about lowliness and gentleness toward others, it is about longsuffering and bearing with others. It is about following in Jesus’ footsteps, loving others even when they have done nothing to earn or deserve it. It seems like nothing, but to the Lord it is everything. It is the calling!
