When you set your mind on things on the earth, there may be some happy, uplifting moments; things are going the way you want or you obtain something you have been wanting or some other such thing. But, these are mere things or events and, alas, can only provide temporary happiness. Just as quickly as your thoughts and feelings are uplifted by these things, they can be brought down when things aren’t so agreeable. Things in this life can change faster than the weather; and that’s fast — sometimes even sudden!
In spite of the uncertainties of the outlook in this life (or the certainty that it will be uncertain!), for a Christian, we do not have to be limited to this world as far as where we set our mind, we can choose the up look instead of the outlook. When you set your mind and your affections on things above rather than things down here on the earth, you can be sure and certain that it will be good and uplifting.
Going back to the example of the weather, on this earth you can experience drastic, even deadly changes in the weather. But, through it all, if you were to ascend above the clouds you would find things as they always are up there — at peace and in order. The heavens declare the glory of God, day and night pouring forth speech, reminding you that all is well and as it should be in God’s Kingdom.
If you set your mind on things above; above the storms and uncertainties of this world, you will find a peace and joy that cannot be achieved naturally. The outlook just cannot provide you with these things; only the up look! God is on His throne and at His right hand, Jesus is sitting and He is always praying for you, constantly making intercession. Your prayers come up before His throne as incense. He hears you when you call on Him. His Word is forever the same and so is His nature. He is the great I AM!
Set your mind on things above, and you will be lifted up and encouraged. You will begin to rejoice in the Lord and His peace and joy will overtake you — be heavenly minded.
