Amen!

The word “amen” means “so be it” and is also used to mean “it is so”. When you use the word in response to what someone is saying, you are agreeing with them that what is said is the truth. You are not making it so by agreeing, but merely acknowledging that what has been spoken is so. You affirm that what is spoken is true when you answer with “amen” and Jesus would affirm that what He was saying was the truth by beginning with “amen”. In other words, whether used at the beginning or the end, the meaning is the same; it is an acknowledgement of the truth.

People want to believe good things are going to happen in their life. They will choose nice sayings that make them feel good about themselves or about something that is important to them. They will affirm or acknowledge that they believe those things because they want them to be true, even if all they have to go on is something someone said or something they read somewhere. They believe in those words because they want them to be true. But, no matter how sincerely someone believes or how firmly they affirm what they believe, their “amen” does not make it so.

The only context in which an “amen” is going to do anyone any good is when it is used in response to the truth of God’s Word. You can read about blessings in the Word of God that are promised to God’s people and are so wonderful you would never presume to ask the Lord for even a portion of such wonderfulness. Yet, God has already spoken and furthermore, He has had these promises written down so that they are forever a part of God’s commitment to you. Even if you wanted to believe for good things in your life, you could not make them happen, but along comes the Lord with a Bible full of blessings and all you can say in response is, “Amen!”

Let the Lord bless you with His grace and with His love and with His abiding presence. Don’t spend your time wishing and hoping for things just because you would like to see them come to pass, look into the Word of God, grab hold of the promises of God and hold onto His word, hold onto the truth. And, as the last word in the Bible says, “Amen!”
