There is nothing wrong with having possessions as long as the possessions do not possess the possessor! The Lord wants to and will provide for you over and above whatever you could think or ask of Him when you have things in the proper order. If you fall for that deception that your life consists of the things you possess, then take heed. That is not what your life is all about. Possessions are not the things that should matter most in your life!
So, what are the things that really matter? If you were to write a list of the seven most important things in your life; things that define who you are and even your very purpose for being, or to put it as Jesus puts it, the things your life consists of, what would be on that list? Would there be some things that can be bought and sold on that list?
It is possible, if you take some time to reflect and take stock of how you have been living your life, that some things may have made that list before today that you now see should be moved down the list (or maybe even removed altogether)! It could also be, if you look back a few years, some things may have seemed so important to you then and now you see how relatively insignificant those things are when you put everything in perspective.
When Jesus says to take heed and beware of covetousness, it is a good indicator that we all could (and probably have at one time or another) fall into that trap of allowing things that shouldn’t really matter all that much to matter too much. Sometimes the key to happiness and contentment is not in having more things but rather in having a good understanding of what matters most.
When you have that understanding and you have the things that really matter at the top of your list (maybe it’s time to re-write that list of seven now!) then you can enjoy and be thankful for what you have in this life without allowing those things to define your life. It’s all about pursuing and possessing the things that really matter!
