Have you ever prayed or asked the Lord for a miracle and then were surprised when He answered your prayer and there you were in the midst of a miracle? That’s kind of where Peter found himself when he saw Jesus walking on the water and said (paraphrasing) “Jesus, if that’s really You then tell me to come to you, out there on the water.” At this point, it could go one of several ways. Jesus could say “no” or He could say “not right now, you aren’t ready for walking on water yet” or He could say “sure, Peter, come on out and walk on water.”
Peter, knowing how water works (as in you can’t walk on it) would naturally expect the Lord’s answer to be number one or two, but instead it’s number three! So, without hesitation, Peter gets out of the boat and begins to walk toward Jesus; walking on water. But, the wind is always going to be against you when you are pressing toward Jesus, especially in the midst of a miracle. This was no exception. As soon as Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and put them on the wind and the waves, he began to sink.
The same thing can happen to you in many different ways every day. It probably won’t be you walking across a lake, but it will be something supernatural God is doing in your life and you get off to a great start until suddenly, you realize, it’s not possible; I’m not able to do this. Immediately, you begin to sink, so to speak. You see everything that is against you and standing in the way of God’s will in your life and you think, “there’s no way, I can’t do this.” In other words, you allow doubt to creep in.
So, what do you do when in doubt? When you think there is no way, remember Jesus is The Way. When you think you can’t do it; you can’t press on anymore remember, you can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. Peter was sinking that morning because of doubt but then, he cried out to Jesus for help. There’s the answer: when you feel like you are sinking and doubt has taken hold of you, cry out to Jesus and He will carry you through!
