As a Christian, who you are is not the same as who you were. You may look in the mirror and think that you are still the same person and others may see you and think you are the same person, but that’s not who you are. The enemy of your soul will try to keep you living as though you are still who you were and all the while the Lord is proclaiming in His Word who you are.
It is like a pauper who has lived his entire life on the streets with nothing to call his own until one day, he finds that he is really the child of a king. It may be difficult for that prince not to see himself as the pauper he has always been instead of the child of a king he now knows he is.
The Father has loved you with an everlasting love and has adopted you into His family because of your faith in the saving grace of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for your sins on the cross. Before, you literally had nothing — you brought nothing into this world and you will take nothing out of it. But once you are born again, you have an eternal inheritance laid up for you in heaven. You are a child of the King, a joint heir with Jesus Christ.
Now would be a good time to make some declarations concerning who you are with no regard for who you were. You have some very specific promises from God to declare. “I am a new creation in Christ. All things in my life have been made new through the redeeming work of my Lord and Savior.” “Nothing that I was has anything to do with who I am.” “I am a king and a priest unto God, I am a child of the Most High God. That’s who I am!”
