It is important to note that, even in a perfect world, there would still be work to do! Adam was given the job of caring for the Garden of Eden before sin entered the world; during a time that the Lord deemed, “very good”.
Even from the very beginning of time, God’s work involved a harvest, so it is no wonder that He would use that same type of work to describe the work of the church and the work of His children. We are called to work in God’s field, to go out into His field and bring in the harvest of souls! Of course, He could do it without us, but He chooses to allow us to be a part of bringing in His harvest. He let’s us help with the harvest.
How can you help with the harvest? The first thing is to lift up your eyes; There is a whole world full of people all around that you never notice if you are always looking down. It is even possible to walk through a crowd of people and not notice one of them. You can go through an entire day without ever interacting with another soul, but God has a work for you to do that involves the people He has put around you.
Then, He is calling you to look at the fields — the souls that are ready to be harvested into God’s Kingdom; those who are seeking the Lord and the knowledge of the Holy One. This takes not just lifting up your eyes to see the people around you but to see them as God sees them; eternal souls so valuable that Jesus was willing to leave heaven and come to earth to die for each one of those souls.
Especially with the people that you are most familiar with and closest to, it is easy to go through life on auto-pilot, as it were. You could go day after day and week after week without ever really looking up and seeing them as God sees them — a potential addition to the Kingdom of God, a special creation of the Master’s hand.
Today is a good day to make a fresh commitment to the Lord to look up and see the potential harvest of souls God has put in your life and get to work helping with the harvest!
