He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, Romans 4:20
Abraham received many wonderful promises from God. He was called the friend of God because of his faith in God’s promises. The only thing about some of these promises is that they seemed too good to be true. Once, God called Abraham outside and had him look up into the heavens and compared the descendants that would be born to him to all of the stars in the sky. What a wonderful promise of God, except for the fact that his wife was barren; she could not conceive. Not only that, they were both past their prime, so to speak!
Even though Abraham and his wife had their moments of struggling to believe, in the end, Abraham believed God, was strengthened in faith and gave God all of the glory. One good thing about a promise from God that is too good to be true — when it does come to pass God gets all of the glory. It might seem like the end of a wonderful story when they had their son, Isaac, but alas, there would be more opportunities for Abraham to waver in his faith. The greatest test of his faith was when the Lord told him to take Isaac, his son of promise, and offer him to the Lord on top of a mountain. Abraham passed this test of his faith and the Lord provided a lamb to be offered in his son’s place.
It takes unwavering faith to receive the promises of God, especially when those promises are too good to even think or ask of the Lord. But, that’s just the beginning; to hold on to that promise you need unwavering faith in God’s faithfulness to keep that which you entrust into His hands. It seems like there is always going to be a test in there somewhere!
Your faith will be tested, but that does not diminish your faith. Instead, the testing of your faith purifies and strengthens it. No matter how unbelievable God’s promises are, receive them by faith and press on without wavering. If God said it, take Him at his word and give Him the glory for it. The potential for wavering is not over yet; trust Him even when it seems the promise may be harder to hold on to than it was to receive in the first place!
When you look back over your walk with the Lord up to this point, you can see many instances of God coming through in amazing and unexpected ways. He is not limited to doing things the way you think they have to be done and the more impossible the promise the more glory goes to the Lord. But, that impossibility can lead to a bit of wavering at times. That’s when you have to set aside every voice that is speaking doubt and even your own thoughts that are contrary to the promises of God and receive strength from the Lord.
Faith pleases God. Choose to walk by faith and believe in God’s promises. Many times, it will seem to get darkest just before the sun breaks through. It can be like that concerning the promises of God. Just when it seems like all hope is about lost for that promise to be realized in your life, it would be easy to waver and even make excuses for the Lord as to why He is not going to do what He said. Instead, just stay steady on and praise Him even in the night. Abraham believed God, although he had nothing else to go on other than God’s word to him. Walk with Him like that. Walk in faith — unwavering faith!
