Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. Psalms 2:8
You may recall a time when you were a child that you really wanted something, perhaps for your birthday or for Christmas, that was more expensive than your usual presents. Even though you really wanted it, you may have been reluctant to mention it to your parents because you felt (and maybe even knew) that it would just be too much to ask.
There are a couple of reasons for this feeling; you could have felt that it was too much to ask because you didn’t feel you were worthy of such an expensive gift. After all, you may not have always been the perfect child (actually, there are no perfect children, or perfect adults or perfect anyone — God alone is perfect!). Even so, parents like to give gifts to their children so it may have worked out in the end.
The other reason you could have felt it was too much to ask is if you were aware of some financial issues that made it virtually impossible for your family to afford such a gift. Many children grow up poor and never even realize they are poor until someone tells them, but there are those times when children overhear adult discussions about money and realize that the month is a lot longer than the money!
Jesus assured us in Matthew chapter seven that even earthly fathers try to give their children good things. If a child asks for bread, a father is not going to give them a stone instead. Jesus is sharing these things to make a contrasting point — no matter how much earthly parents want to give good gifts to their children, that cannot even be compared to the good gifts our heavenly Father wants to give to you, if you will but ask.
You probably have no doubt that God has all of the resources needed for whatever you ask of Him. Everything belongs to the Lord, the earth and all its fullness. There are never any shortages in God’s kingdom. So, if there is a hesitancy in asking the Lord for something, it’s probably not going to be because you don’t think He can give it to you. Why then might you have the tendency to think it could be too much to ask of Him then?
It goes back to the first reason and probably all the way back to childhood. How can you ask for something so good when you have the feeling of unworthiness? Your Father in heaven desires to give good gifts to you, not because you have somehow earned them, but just because He loves you and you are His child. When you are born again, you are adopted into the family of God. A part of being God’s child is that you now have a Father who loves you perfectly and completely and because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for you, there is nothing that can keep you from the Father’s presence. You can come before His throne of grace anytime.
You may be at a place right now where you need something big from the Lord, but you are hesitant to ask. How could you ask your Father for such a blessing? Because He is your Father! No matter how big the request, it’s not too much to ask!
