Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23
What’s new? Well, sometimes it can seem like life is just more of the same day after day, as if nothing is new. Things can become so familiar that you do not notice the changes, the newness, in each day. You can begin to take for granted the things all around you and miss the wonder of the newness in each moment, for indeed this moment has never been nor will it ever be again.
You may have seen plenty of sunrises but one thing is for sure, you’ve never seen the same one twice! And, what about sunsets? You may have witnessed the glory of God’s creation as the sun is setting and it’s as if the Lord is painting a masterpiece in the sky just for you. But, you can be sure, it’s not a print — it’s an original. There will never be another one like it.
Every morning the Lord creates a new thing with the rising of the sun and in the evening, He ends the day with another one of a kind work of art. That’s just a couple of magnificent examples of what’s new every day; a reminder to look around at all that is new, all that is changing and being renewed and restored and replenished and refreshed day by day, moment by moment.
But, it is not just the natural world that experiences all of this newness. The things you see are, in many ways, a reflection of the things unseen. We see in our verses two things that are new every morning for God’s children; His mercies and His compassions. To expand those two words out we could say that God’s merciful kindness and unfailing love for you are just like brand new each and every morning.
Can you imagine a relationship with the Lord where every morning, no matter how much you failed the day before or the week or month or year before, His kindness and love for you are so perfect and complete, it is as though nothing had ever come between you? Every day it’s like the first day of your relationship with the Lord and the past is so completely covered by Jesus’ sacrifice for you, it’s as if you have no past before Jesus.
Don’t allow a day or even a moment to get away from you without experiencing the wonder of what God is doing. The wonder of His creation, the wonder of the lives of those you love as they are made new each day, literally transformed, as little ones grow and as grown ones mature. Things and people that you can easily become so used to seeing that you see right through them. Even the work that God is doing (or is wanting to do) in your own life can easily be overlooked if you don’t take time to see what’s new. Spending time each day experiencing, acknowledging and really seeing the work of God can help you to live each moment to the fullest and get out of that moment everything the Lord put in it for you.
Today’s new sunrise and new sunset. Every cloud and every drop of rain familiar yet new. All of the newness God is bringing about in the lives of those around you. And, above all, God’s merciful kindness and unfailing love. That’s what’s new!
