The LORD will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands. Psalms 138:8
What is it that the Lord will perfect concerning you? When you are born again, you are as saved as you will ever be. There is nothing you can do to save yourself; you are not saved by works but by faith in Jesus Christ and by His grace.
Still, there are things in your life that are not yet perfect (at least one or two things!). Just as Jesus said, when you become a Christian, you are born again — you are starting from the beginning just like a new born baby. That means (among other things) that you are going to fall down while you are learning to walk and maybe even stumble a time or two after you are walking and running.
When you are learning to talk, you may not always have the right words to say or you may say the right thing but at the wrong time or the wrong thing at the wrong time or you may just say too much or maybe not enough. There is a lot to be learned concerning the tongue and its power of death and life.
As you grow in your relationship with the Lord, your walk will get better and better as well as your talk, if your walk and talk are submitted to the Lord. He will be perfecting those areas of your life day by day
Just because the Lord has begun a work in you, that does not mean the work has been completed. As a child of God, you are a work in progress; there is always something that can be tweaked if you are willing. There is always room to grow.
But, what if God expected you to be perfect right from the start? Where would that leave you if you had to be a perfect child as soon as you were born again? Just like everyone who has ever lived, you are not going to be complete or totally perfected until your mortal body puts on immortality. Until then, you will need something supernatural; something that comes from heaven to earth: you will need God’s mercy.
One way to emphasize something you really want someone to hear is to repeat it. This is also a method the Lord uses in His Word to emphasize truths. The more often He repeats something, the more that truth is being emphasized. In Psalms 136, we see the Lord repeat a truth twenty-six times! That is a lot of emphasis. And, what is the truth that is so important for you to grasp that He would repeat it that many times just in one Psalm? The truth is, “The Lord is good, and His mercy endures forever.”
The Lord will never forsake you for, after all, you are the work of His hands and He is at work in you. Sure, you may stumble or fall from time to time, but God’s mercy will get you back up and pressing on again. You may not always be perfect but you serve a perfect God who is for you and not against you, a loving Father who wants you to grow and overcome and become more like Him every day. You can; because His mercy endures forever!
