Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. Galatians 6:7
Life is not as complicated and unpredictable as it may sometimes seem to be. Sure, there are plenty of variables and curves and ups and downs along the way, but there is also a lot of it that is as clear as day, if we are willing to see.
This clarity will always originate from one source — the Bible, the one and only source of truth. To help us understand many of these truths, the Lord gives us illustrations or word pictures taken from the natural world around us. It is helpful to remember that the God who created the eternal, unseen world of the spirit is the same God who created the natural, visible world in which we live.
So, let’s get to how you can uncomplicate your life and turn the unpredictable into predictable and purposeful. To understand this spiritual truth, the Lord gives us a natural example; that of sowing and reaping or, in other words planting stuff and then later harvesting what was planted. We already have a clue in this expanded definition; you can only harvest what was planted.
What if, for example, you wanted your life to be filled with good and godly things, what could you possibly do to make that happen? After all, you can’t predict the future, can you? It is not a matter of predicting the future, it is simply a matter of reading the label on the seeds you are planting. If you plant bad seeds how could you expect to one day reap a good harvest?
Children are a good place for planting seeds — their heart and soul are like sponges to soak up whatever is given to them; like a garden of rich, fertile soil. Whatever is planted in their mind and in their heart is what you should expect to one day grow and produce fruit. The only harvest you can expect from their life is based on the seeds that have been planted!
The same can be said of the home. If you want a home filled with peace and joy, what kind of seeds would you think you need to be planting? When you look at it like that, it does tend to uncomplicate things. You can literally change the atmosphere in your home by planting a different crop of seeds. Now, it may take some plowing up of the old to prepare for the new so don’t expect a harvest overnight, but in due season, you will begin to see the fruit.
You can apply this principle at work or at school; anywhere and everywhere, for everything in this world is subject to this truth: you reap what you sow. Do not be concerned with the mockers and nay-sayers; you keep sowing good seeds in faith and trust God for the harvest.
And, what if you have planted some bad seeds in your life? God’s mercies are new every morning. It’s time to get the plow out and prepare your heart and home for a fresh planting. It doesn’t matter if you have always planted a certain kind of seed, from this moment forward things can be different, they can be good. It’s all a matter of sowing and reaping!
