He is My Refuge

I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” Psalms 91:2

The Psalmist makes a very bold and distinct declaration here concerning who God is in his life and as a result, provides us with direction for our daily life; and for the words we speak. As you go through the Psalm, you find that he mentions various perils, dangers and evils that seem to be a part of life. Indeed, there is evil in the world because of sin and you will face the effects of it in and around you on your journey through life.

The key is that he did not focus on the problems that are inevitable for all who live in a world that is under the curse of sin, but instead he focused on God’s provision to make it through. Before he gets to the part about needing deliverance and protection, he has already declared that God is his Deliverer and Protector!

Let’s look at our verse more closely: he begins with a declaration concerning the Lord that is personal and specific to his life, his relationship with God. First, he declares God to be his refuge, which denotes a place of shelter and hope; a safe place. He is saying that the Lord is his safe place.

Next, he declares the Lord to be his fortress, which is a stronghold, like unto a castle, a place of defense against every enemy; a strong place. He knew that as long as he was under the shadow of the Almighty God, he would be protected and defended against any enemy. No matter how big or how strong the threat against you, God is bigger and stronger!

Finally, the Psalmist sums up the verse; “He is my God and I will always put my trust in Him.” His confession is not half-hearted or wavering but he is steadfast as he continues with the Psalm. He uses such phrases as “Surely He shall” and “He shall” and “Shall be” and “No evil shall befall you” and “He shall give” and “You shall tread upon”. One thing you don’t find in any of these examples or anywhere in this Psalm; there are no “maybes”. To declare God as your refuge and fortress, your safe and strong place, you must believe that God wants to protect and provide for you, not that He might or maybe He will but rather, “Surely He shall”.

What do you say of the Lord? Do you declare Him to be your refuge? Your fortress? Your God? Do you pledge your absolute trust in Him and in His unfailing love toward you? If you have missed some days (or weeks or months or years) of declaring who God is in your life, it’s not too late to get started or to get back on track. Get your confession in line with who God has declared Himself to be for all those who are willing to come to Him.

“Heavenly Father, today I say You are my refuge, my shelter from the storms of life. All my hope is in You, Lord. You are my safe place. Father, I declare that You and You alone are my fortress, my defense against the enemy, my deliverer from every evil in this world. I put my trust in you to keep safe and sound all that I have put into Your hands. I will not fear any danger, for You are my God, You are my fortress, You are my refuge. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
