Follow the Lord to Victory

Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. 2 Corinthians 2:14

When it comes to most things in life, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Granted, it’s more pleasant to win, but alas, there are some lessons that come only with loss; it’s just a part of life. Some wins and losses are trivial and hold no significance in the overall scheme of things. In other areas, the stakes may be much higher and have more of an impact on your life.

Winning and losing is not always as cut and dried as it may seem. In fact, some things in your life may have seemed like defeats at the time only to be revealed later to be the best thing for you. What looked like a loss ended up being a big win. If a person’s only objective is to “win at any cost”, they will more than likely end up being a loser in the end.

The Apostle Paul helps us to understand this principle as he writes in the third chapter of Philippians about how meeting Jesus changed his perspective and his priorities. Before, he had many things that he counted as wins; his money, his education, even his religion! But, an important transformation took place in his life once he met Jesus — everything that was a gain to him he now considered it a loss; he traded all of that to have Jesus.

What about Jesus’ life, how would it measure up to anybody’s definition of success? He was born to unknown parents from an extremely small rural village, the son of a carpenter. As He began His ministry around thirty years old, He did not even have a place to lay His head. Add to that the fact that everyone abandoned and forsook Him at the end and He ended up in the hands of evil men who would eventually put Him to death. That pretty much sums it up from the natural, earthly perspective.

When you look at it like that, it doesn’t seem like Jesus had many victories in His life but He certainly seemed to have a lot of losses. The key is to not judge the outcome by the obvious goings-on. You cannot know the outcome until its time has come. For Jesus, it was three days in the grave before He came up out of that grave and defeated every enemy; even death itself!

With all of the uncertainty you face in this life, there are things that are certain, things you can be absolutely sure of. Every morning when you rise you can know for sure that these things have not and will not ever change. All of these truths are found in the Word of God, which abides forever. The thing we see today that is for certain is this: If you are following Jesus, He will always lead you to victory.

It doesn’t matter what the battle is, how big the stakes are, how important it is to your life; you can be certain that, if you are following Jesus, He will lead you to victory in the end. You are always a winner with the Lord. Just be careful not to pursue the win instead of pursuing the One, Jesus, who has won for you the victory. Even when there seems to be no way for a win, keep on keeping on with the Lord, follow Him all the way to the victory
