Some Things You Know

We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 1 John 5:19-20

You never have to wonder about the things you know since, after all, you know them. There are plenty of things you don’t know (don’t worry, everyone is in the same boat!) and many of those things you will not know as long as you live in this mortal body. One day, you will know as you are known, when mortality has put on immortality. But, for the time being, there are some things you know and many things you don’t.

One thing you can be sure of as a child of God; you are on a need-to-know basis with Him and if there is something you need to know, He will make it known or has already made it known to you. The word know is found thirty-two times in the book of First John alone, so you can be sure the Lord cares about what you know and will never hold out on you. Remember, the devil’s first trick was convincing Eve that she needed to know some things that God had never intended her (or any of us) to know.

Let’s take a look at some things you know from our verses today. First, you know you are of God. Without the knowledge of God and His plan for your life, nothing else fits. You can’t put the puzzle of life together without this piece. The next thing you know makes tons of other pieces of the puzzle fit. You may have heard something like, “How can I believe in a good God when there is so much evil in the world?”. You know the answer to that question and to a multitude of similar questions as you go through this life. You know that the devil is real and the whole world is under his sway (but his day is coming and he will get what’s coming to him!).

Even though the world is under the enemy’s sway, you know that Jesus Christ has come into the world and brought His Kingdom into the heart and life of anyone who will accept Him by faith and be born again into His family. You know that this world is passing away but God has prepared a world for you to live in that will be for eternity. You know that Jesus has gone to prepare a place for you and when He returns He will bring you to that eternal home to be with Him forever.

God has given you this understanding; to know Jesus, to know the truth of God’s Word. To understand the mystery of God making His home in you, Christ in you — the hope of glory. All of these things you know because the Lord has caused you to understand them. Not in the natural sense of figuring it out in your mind. Being God’s child does not mean you have everything figured out or that you are perfect in everything you do, it just means you know and have living in you, the One who does have it all figured out and is perfect in all of His ways.

Don’t worry about what has not been revealed to you or what you do not yet understand. God has given you an understanding of all you need to know and that’s what you know!
