Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. Proverbs 27:1
What if you were to put all of your tomorrows into God’s hands? For one thing, it would take a load off of your mind (to say nothing of your emotions if you were ever prone to worry about things that you can do nothing about!)
It’s better to put your life and your future into the hands of the One who created you rather than try to take all of those unknowns upon yourself. To begin with, the Lord already knows everything about your life from beginning to end. Even when you were yet unformed in the womb, the Lord knew all of your days. Now, compare that to what you know about your life and your future and you can see clearly that you cannot see beyond the here and now.
This is the day that the Lord has made, therefore who should get the glory for this day? You are an inhabitant of your Father’s world and you are the work of His hands. Every day is made by Him and for Him; acknowledge Him today and every day as the Maker of all things.
When Jesus gave us a model or a template for daily prayer, it included several vital parts. First, glorify God and honor His name. Next, pray for the Father’s will to be done in your life today. Then, He taught us to cover some things that relate to today, not tomorrow or some other tomorrow, but today. Pray for God’s provision for today, give and receive forgiveness as needed today and pray for God’s deliverance today.
Another thing Jesus taught and exhorted us is to not worry about tomorrow. There are plenty of things you do not know about tomorrow and many of those you could do nothing about even if you did know about them in advance. You are not the creator of tomorrow any more than you are of today. Give God the glory for what He has done and for what He is doing and for what He is going to do. Even though you don’t know exactly what all of that entails, you know the Lord and you know He is always good, so you can trust Him with your tomorrows.
What is your part in tomorrow then? The same as it is for today — trust and obey. In order to overcome worry, you must entrust to the Lord’s care that which you have been worried about. Cast those cares upon the Lord because He cares for you. Lay down that burden of the unknown and put your trust in the One who loves you completely and has promised to never leave or forsake you.
A good measurement of your trust in the Lord is your obedience to Him. The best preparation for tomorrow, with all of its unknowns, is to obey God today; to honor and acknowledge Him as the maker of this day and the One who holds all of your tomorrows in His hand. You will never see any further than you can see and must therefore depend on the God who created you to be your eyes into the future. You do not know what a day will bring forth, but your loving Father knows it all. Put tomorrow in His hands!
