How Shall They?

For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? Romans 10:13-14

Today we start with a verse that proclaims a truth emphatically; whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. First, we see that the Lord does not limit this promise to a select few or to a certain group, this promise is for anyone and everyone who is willing to acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord. And the promise? They shall be saved!

It is important to note that the very next verse contains three questions, all of them including the word “shall”. Immediately after He states the promise, the Lord reveals His plan for the fulfillment of this promise. In order for someone to call on the name of the Lord, they must believe. Without faith it is impossible to please God. You cannot even come to God unless you believe that He is.

But, how can someone believe in a God they cannot see? Everyone knows there is a God because of His creation. The sun, moon and stars declare His glory through their shining. The birds of the air and the flowers of the field all declare the glory of their Creator. As the Bible says, only a fool would say there is no God. Knowing God, however, is not the same as knowing there is a God. In order for someone to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, they must have heard about Him, for faith comes by hearing the Word of God.

Finally, the third “how shall they”: how can someone hear unless someone tells them? Exactly. We know it is God’s will that all come to repentance and be saved, yet most people are, and have always been, on the wide road that leads to destruction. Even though God wants them to be saved, there is a part for us to play in that process.

Perhaps you know some people (maybe even family or life-long friends) who are not saved. If they would just believe in Jesus and call on the Lord, they would be saved. But, have they been told? You could be the vessel the Lord uses to minister to those lost souls. You don’t have to be a preacher to proclaim the Gospel of Christ; just a Christian who is willing.

Everything you have received from the Lord, including salvation, is given not just for your benefit but for the benefit and blessing of others as well. Freely you have received; freely give. You are called to be blessed and to be a blessing to others. Also, remember that your life has been blessed as a result of others who were willing and obedient to the Lord to share the truth of the Gospel with you at some point.

Some people’s lives are so off track, it seems as if they are destined to remain in the dark their entire life. Yet, we know that there is the potential for their life to be completely turned around. But, how can that be? How can their life ever be anything other than what it now is? It is clear that the Lord wants them to become His child, but how shall that ever happen unless the Lord intervenes. Maybe He already has; maybe the intervention is you!
