He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Psalms 91:1
Some of God’s most awesome provisions for your life are actually hidden from the natural man and are only spiritually discerned and detected. For instance, you can be seemingly all alone and yet be enjoying fellowship in the presence of God. If someone were to casually see you praying or praising God or reveling in His Word, it might seem odd, for they only see one side of the fellowship, the relationship.
Similarly, you could be in a crowd of people with things going on all around you and a cacophony of noises assaulting the senses and yet you find a place of peace and rest in the presence of the Lord. Again, it might seem out of place if someone observed your demeaner in the midst of all of that chaos, but it is because you have a found a secret place that no one nor anything can keep you from — the presence of the Most High God!
Once, Jesus was in a boat with His disciples when a terrible storm blew up suddenly. At first glance, you would think that Jesus must have been caught off-guard since He is the one who had directed the disciples to take this trip in the first place. But of course, the Lord is never caught off-guard or unprepared, He knows the end from the beginning and everything in between!
If you were on the outside of the boat looking on at this scene, you would see two totally different approaches to the situation at hand. On the one hand, you have the disciples who, even though they were experienced fishermen, literally thought that this was the end of the line; they thought they would not survive this storm. On the other hand, you have Jesus asleep in the bow of the boat. If Jesus was in the same boat as His disciples and in the midst of the same storm, why was His response to it so different compared to His disciples? Did He know something they did not know?
The key is not about what you know, for you can’t see any further into the future than the disciples could or than anyone else can. All you can see is what you can see. No, it’s not about what you know but rather Who you know. Jesus didn’t question the disciples about what they knew concerning storms or if anyone had checked the weather report before setting sail that day. His question was directed toward their relationship with the Father, “Where is your faith?”.
Notice the two ways the Lord is referred to in this verse, the Most High God and the Almighty. Both are references to the fact that, no matter how big the storm is, your God is bigger! As God’s child, you always have a place of refuge in the midst of the storm. It doesn’t mean there will be no storms in life, but it does guarantee you safe passage through those storms. The bigger the storm, the more glory to God. The Lord is not caught off-guard by the challenges you face in your life and He is aware of what you are facing. He has not left you to face those storms of life all on your own and He has not brought you this far to let you down now. He always provides you a safe place; under the shadow of the Almighty!
