It’s Never Hopeless

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God. Psalms 43:5

Here (as in quite a few other verses) we find the Psalmist talking to himself, more specifically to his soul. He is asking questions and then confessing the answer out loud and then making a good confession about his future and the outcome of the situation at hand. As a Christian, you know the answer to hopelessness — hope in God. Still, it’s not always easy to keep your soul in line with what your spirit knows to be true! There is the potential for that same battle today within your own soul: the battle against hopelessness.

Even though there are clearly defined promises in the Word of God, literally taking God at His word when all of your senses are telling you the opposite, can be a battle indeed. There are plenty of things in life that could potentially cause your soul to be cast down and disquieted within you. If all you had to go by was what you see and feel, you would have no source of hope, but there is an unseen factor that can turn any hopeless situation around — God.

All the way back to the beginning of time, it seemed as if Adam’s sin had doomed mankind forever. Because of his sin, all hope would have been lost. But God gave us hope in the promise of a Messiah. And, when the fullness of time had come, He sent His Son, Jesus, and hope was once again born among men. Any time you feel as if your failings keep you from God’s goodness, remember, it is never hopeless. Jesus became a curse on the cross to take the curse of your sin upon Himself. You always have the hope of His forgiveness when you confess and forsake sin. You will find yourself covered in the mercy of God!

What about the father of the prodigal son? What hope did he have of ever seeing his beloved son again? He had gone off into the world and thrown to the wind everything of any true value he had in his life. It would have been easy for that father to be cast down and even despondent, but he never lost his hope in God. When his son finally came to his senses and began his journey home, while he was still a long way from home, his father saw him and ran out to meet him. His father was believing and expecting his return, even though in the natural there was no hope. He knew the love of his heavenly Father and he had confidence that one day his son would come back to him. With God, it’s never hopeless!

Even if it seems like your life is a mess with no hope of ever being any better, remember that God created you special and unique and He has a plan for your future that includes good things, for every good thing comes from God. Your life is not hopeless as long as it is in the hands of the One who created you. Like a potter, he can take your life and re-shape and re-make it as He will, if you let Him. It’s never hopeless when God is in it!

If you know of children who have left everything good to pursue the things of this world remember; it’s not over until the Lord says it’s over, and with Him, there is always hope. You do not have to see it for it to be so. You do not have to feel it for it to be so. Sometimes you have to have that talk with your soul and remind yourself. It’s never hopeless!
